Monthly RWA Market Brief — October 1, 2026

FundSmart RWA Intelligence Independent market commentary. Not investment advice.

Executive Summary

The tokenized real-world asset market enters October 2026 at $38.63 billion in distributed asset value, down 0.95% over 30 days, while represented asset value surged 38.30% to $367.84 billion — a striking divergence showing that institutional pipeline and fund registration continue to accelerate even as on-chain distributed value sees minor outflows. Total asset holders crossed 4.95 million, up 55.45% month-over-month, driven largely by the tokenized equities boom.

The defining event of September was the SEC's five-year Innovation Exemption (September 18), creating the first legal pathway for on-chain trading of tokenized U.S. stocks. Combined with DTCC's Canton network going live, Centrifuge's historic token-to-equity conversion (CP172), and continued Hong Kong regulatory progress, September 2026 may be remembered as the month tokenization crossed from experimental to structural.

1. Market Overview

| Metric | Value (Sep 30, 2026) | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | Distributed Asset Value | $38.63B | ▼ 0.95% | | Represented Asset Value | $367.84B | ▲ +38.30% | | Total Asset Holders | 4,950,893 | ▲ +55.45% | | Total Stablecoin Value | $294.67B | ▲ +1.13% | | Total Stablecoin Holders | 292.41M | ▲ +2.72% |

Source: RWA.xyz, as of September 30, 2026

The distributed-represented divergence is the story of the month. Distributed value (tokens actually live on-chain and transferable) dipped slightly, largely due to JLTXX's 28.44% drop and minor Treasury outflows. But represented value — the total AUM of funds and assets registered for tokenization — jumped 38%, indicating that institutional issuers are building pipeline faster than retail is deploying capital on-chain. The 55% surge in holders suggests broadening adoption at the user level, particularly in tokenized equities.

2. Tokenized U.S. Treasury Funds

Tokenized U.S. Treasuries remain the institutional beachhead of the RWA market, with approximately $16 billion in distributed value across 70+ products.

Top Holdings by AUM

| Fund | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | USYC (Hashnote) | $2.4B | ▼ 1.11% | | USDY (Ondo Finance) | $2.3B | ▲ +0.32% | | BUIDL (BlackRock) | $2.2B | ▼ 1.24% | | iBENJI (Franklin Templeton intl.) | $1.7B | ▼ 0.09% | | WTGXX (WisdomTree) | $1.2B | ▼ 0.40% | | BENJI (Franklin Templeton) | $663.6M | ▼ 0.63% | | JLTXX (JPMorgan) | $595.4M | ▼ 28.44% | | USTB (Superstate) | $588.8M | ▲ +5.12% | | CUMIU (Cumulo) | $553.4M | ▼ 0.07% | | JTRSY (JPMorgan) | $344.4M | ▼ 0.10% |

Source: RWA.xyz

Key Observations

  • USYC has overtaken BUIDL as the largest tokenized Treasury fund at $2.4B, while BUIDL slipped to $2.2B (-1.24%). BlackRock's multi-chain fund, once dominant, faces intensifying competition as fees compress and new entrants proliferate.

  • JLTXX's 28.44% plunge is the most notable outlier. JPMorgan's tokenized money market fund saw significant redemptions this month — worth monitoring for whether this signals institutional preference shifting to alternative products or broader Treasury outflows.

  • USTB (Superstate) grew 5.12%, bucking the generally flat-to-negative trend across Treasury products. This may reflect demand for lower-minimum, more accessible tokenized Treasury exposure.

  • Ondo's OUSG held at $342.6M in underlying assets, with a 7-day yield of 3.48%. Its portfolio is now diversified across State Street Galaxy SWEEP (44%), BUIDL (30%), BENJI (15%), and Fidelity FYOXX (10%), showing how tokenized funds are layering on top of each other in a maturing stack.

Yield Environment

The Federal Reserve's SOFR rate continues to anchor tokenized Treasury yields in the 3.4–4.7% range. Ondo's USDY offers approximately 4.65% APY (accruing to token price), while OUSG delivers 3.45% (30-day). BENJI offers 3.57%. The yield compression across products suggests increasing fee competition — a trend that benefits users but pressures issuer margins.

3. Tokenized Private Credit

Tokenized private credit remains a $7–8 billion distributed value category, with institutional origination accelerating.

Top Holdings by AUM

| Product | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | JAAA (JPMorgan) | $589.3M | ▲ +0.95% | | TPT30 (TTM Capital) | $500.0M | — | | STAC (Samsung) | $281.9M | ▼ 21.05% | | CFSRS (CenterSquare) | $206.7M | — | | AA_FalconX | $159.0M | ▲ +3.2% | | vUSD (Varcl) | $107.3M | ▲ +0.11% | | ACRED (Apollo) | $95.3M | ▼ 0.33% | | sUSDat | $70.5M | ▼ 1.94% | | mF-ONE (M&G) | $63.6M | ▲ +0.48% | | BRVERTCRA4T3 | $56.2M | — |

Source: RWA.xyz

Key Developments

  • STAC (Samsung) dropped 21.05%, the second-largest decline in credit after JLTXX in treasuries. This may reflect Asian institutional rebalancing or redemptions — a trend worth tracking across Asian-issued tokenized products.

  • JAAA continues to grow steadily at $589.3M (+0.95%), reinforcing JPMorgan's position as the dominant institutional tokenized credit issuer. Its consistent growth contrasts with the volatility in Asian-issued products.

  • Maple Finance continues to lead DeFi-native private credit with $4B+ AUM and $12B+ cumulative originations. The SYRUP token migration from MPL is complete, and repayment rates remain at approximately 99%. Maple represents the institutional-grade DeFi lending model that survived Goldfinch's collapse and emerged stronger.

  • Centrifuge achieved a historic milestone: governance proposal CP172 passed, enabling the first-ever token-to-equity conversion in RWA history. Eligible CFG token holders may exchange 1 CFG for 1 share of tokenized equity. This fundamentally redefines what an RWA protocol token can represent — moving from utility/governance to direct equity ownership. Centrifuge's TVL stands at $1.6B with Coinbase selecting it as preferred tokenization infrastructure.

  • Apollo's ACRED remains steady at $95.3M, showing that major traditional asset managers are maintaining their on-chain credit presence despite modest outflows.

Risk Considerations

The private credit space requires careful separation of distributed value (on-chain, transferable) versus represented value (registered AUM). Many credit products show large represented values but limited on-chain transfer activity. Investors should examine:

  • Underwriting quality: Who originates the loans? What is the default history?
  • Legal claim: What does the token represent — direct loan exposure, securitized tranche, or fund share?
  • Liquidity: Is there a secondary market, or are redemptions the only exit?

4. Tokenized Commodities

Gold-Backed Tokens

| Token | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | XAUT (Tether Gold) | $2.9B | ▲ +11.25% | | PAXG (Paxos Gold) | $1.8B | ▼ 2.32% | | AZG (Aurus Gold) | $129.7M | ▼ 2.4% | | PGOLD (Perth Mint) | $81.7M | ▼ 2.4% | | XAUm (Matreon) | $56.9M | ▼ 2.4% |

Source: RWA.xyz

Gold at approximately $4,160/oz continues to drive tokenized commodities, with total sector value at approximately $5.0 billion.

XAUT surged 11.25% to $2.9B, significantly outpacing PAXG which declined 2.32%. This divergence suggests market preference is consolidating toward Tether Gold, possibly due to deeper liquidity, broader exchange integration, and the Aave lending market's $55.4M XAUT reserve. PAXG's decline may reflect competitive pressure or specific redemption activity.

The gold tokenization market shows a clear winner-take-most dynamic: XAUT and PAXG together represent over 93% of tokenized commodities. Smaller gold tokens (AZG, PGOLD, XAUm) all declined uniformly by ~2.4%, suggesting these are correlated redemptions rather than market-specific events.

Other Commodities

Silver tokens (SLVon at $25.5M) and diversified gold instruments (GLDx at $11.7M, IAUon at $10.1M) remain niche but are growing slowly. No significant non-precious-metal commodity tokens have gained meaningful traction this month.

5. Tokenized Equities

Tokenized equities are the fastest-growing RWA category, reaching approximately $2.8 billion in total market value — up from $421M a year ago, a more than 6x increase.

Top Holdings by AUM

| Token | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | SECZ (Securitize) | $430.4M | ▲ +15.81% | | STRCx (xStocks) | $135.6M | ▲ +0.04% | | CRCLB (Circle/Binance) | $125.6M | ▲ +9.53% | | CRCLon (Circle onchain) | $100.1M | ▼ 9.25% | | SPCXB (S&P 500 xStock) | $83.0M | ▲ +16.24% | | MSTRB (MicroStrategy bStock) | $82.4M | ▲ +19.51% | | STRCon (S&P 500 onchain) | $75.3M | ▲ +433.6% | | MSTRx (MicroStrategy xStock) | $73.2M | ▲ +14.89% | | IVVon (IVV onchain) | $70.3M | ▲ +0.05% | | FGRS (Figma) | $69.8M | ▼ 15.38% |

The SEC Innovation Exemption — September's Landmark Event

On September 18, 2026, the SEC approved a five-year Innovation Exemption — a regulatory sandbox that legalizes on-chain trading of tokenized U.S. stocks for the first time. Key conditions:

  1. One-to-one correspondence: Tokenized stocks must maintain 1:1 backing with registered securities
  2. Equal rights: Token holders retain the same economic and voting rights as traditional shareholders
  3. Enhanced disclosure: Real-time audit trails and mandatory customer asset segregation
  4. Phased compliance: 90-day infrastructure review, 6-month segregation rules, ongoing SEC reporting
  5. ATS or exchange trading: Must operate through SEC-regulated alternative trading systems or national exchanges

Robinhood and other platforms welcomed the framework. The exemption enables 24/7 trading models since blockchain settlement operates outside traditional market hours. First operational plans from approved platforms are expected in Q4 2026.

Market Structure

  • Ondo Finance, Kraken's xStocks, and Binance's bStocks now control approximately 81% of the tokenized stock market
  • Binance bStocks hit $754M in tokenized equity holdings, with rapid retail adoption
  • STRCon's 433.6% surge reflects the explosive growth in onchain S&P 500 exposure products
  • Figma (FGRS) declined 15.38%, the only major decliner — likely reflecting post-IPO price correction rather than tokenization-specific issues

Diligence Priorities

The Innovation Exemption creates enormous opportunity but also new risks:

  • Ownership verification: Does the token represent direct equity ownership or a synthetic derivative? The SEC explicitly excluded synthetic tokens.
  • Custody and segregation: How are the underlying shares custodied? Are they bankruptcy-remote?
  • Transfer restrictions: KYC requirements vary by platform — some allow free DEX trading, others enforce allowlist permissioning
  • Cross-border issues: Non-U.S. holders face different regulatory treatment

6. Private Equity / Venture Capital

| Fund | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | BCAP (Blockchain Capital) | $973.3M | ▲ +0.46% | | TTN-III (Titan III) | $362.4M | — | | HERA-I-E (Hera) | $342.4M | — | | EXODB (Exodus) | $141.1M | ▼ 5.25% | | CREV (Creative Ventures) | $88.1M | — |

Source: RWA.xyz

Tokenized PE/VC remains concentrated at approximately $2.1 billion, with BCAP (Blockchain Capital) dominating at $973.3M. This category is growing slowly because PE/VC tokens face fundamental illiquidity challenges — these are long-duration, illiquid assets that tokenization cannot fully solve. However, the SEC Innovation Exemption may eventually open pathways for secondary trading of these tokens.

7. Active Strategies

| Product | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | eurSAFO (Eurizon SAFO) | $1.5B | ▲ +2.21% | | sUSDe (Ethena) | $1.3B | ▼ 3.18% | | SAFO (Eurizon) | $210.8M | ▲ +0.13% | | MI4 (M&G Index) | $165.1M | ▼ 1.46% | | USCC (Superstate) | $128.2M | ▲ +11.33% | | pEAK (Peak) | $101.7M | — | | aHYPER (aHyper) | $90.5M | ▼ 0.12% | | CFSAI (CFS AI) | $56.8M | — | | gbpSAFO (Eurizon GBP) | $48.6M | ▼ 0.53% | | aHyperBTC (aHyper BTC) | $42.0M | ▼ 3.06% |

Source: RWA.xyz

Active strategies — tokenized funds with dynamic management rather than passive exposure — total approximately $3.6 billion. Eurizon's SAFO products dominate at multi-currency scale ($1.5B EUR, $210.8M USD, $48.6M GBP). USCC (Superstate) grew 11.33%, suggesting demand for actively managed crypto-correlated strategies.

8. Real Estate

| Project | Value | |---|---| | GRO (Groundbreaker) | $92.2M | | PAZ-1 | $22.4M | | PRPTY (RealT) | $20.0M | | PFII (Parafi) | $16.3M | | PRO-100 | $5.2M |

Source: RWA.xyz

Tokenized real estate remains the smallest major category at approximately $160 million. Despite theoretical appeal (fractional ownership, 24/7 trading, global access), real estate tokenization has struggled with:

  • Regulatory complexity across jurisdictions
  • Illiquidity of underlying assets
  • Property management and cash flow distribution challenges
  • Limited secondary market depth

Tether's move into real estate tokenization in Saudi Arabia (announced earlier in 2026) could bring scale to this category, but no significant new real estate tokenization launches occurred in September.

9. Stablecoins

| Stablecoin | Value | 30-Day Change | |---|---|---| | USDT (Tether) | $183.0B | ▲ +0.26% | | USDC (Circle) | $73.4B | ▼ 1.06% | | USDS (Sky/Maker) | $6.9B | ▲ +2.33% | | USDe (Ethena) | $4.9B | ▲ +0.28% | | DAI (MakerDAO) | $4.6B | ▼ 0.10% | | USD1 (World Liberty Financial) | $4.4B | ▲ +0.23% | | PYUSD (PayPal) | $2.7B | ▲ +0.82% | | RLUSD (Ripple) | $2.5B | ▲ +6.68% | | USDG (Paxos Gold) | $1.6B | ▼ 1.72% | | USDf (Floating) | $1.3B | 0% |

Source: RWA.xyz

Key Observations

  • Total stablecoin market: $294.67B, up 1.13% over 30 days, with 292.41M holders (+2.72%)
  • RLUSD (Ripple) grew 6.68% — the fastest-growing major stablecoin, likely benefiting from Ripple's expanding cross-border payments use case
  • USDS (Sky/Maker) grew 2.33% as the MakerDAO ecosystem rebrand continues to gain traction
  • USDC declined 1.06% — minor but worth monitoring. Circle's IPO and regulatory positioning remain strong, but market share is fragmenting
  • USDG (Paxos) declined 1.72%, possibly related to the gold-pegged stablecoin facing competition from direct gold token exposure via XAUT
  • USDT's dominance at $183B (62% market share) remains unchallenged despite regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions

EU MiCA Enforcement

MiCA's full enforcement deadline passed on July 1, 2026. ESMA issued a public statement on June 23 ordering unauthorized providers to stop onboarding EU clients. The impact is now visible: several smaller stablecoin issuers have exited the EU market entirely, while USDC and USDT have both secured MiCA-compliant issuance through regulated European entities. This regulatory clarity is a net positive for the RWA ecosystem, as compliant stablecoins are the settlement rail for most tokenized asset transactions.

10. Regulatory Landscape

United States

SEC Innovation Exemption (September 18, 2026) — The most significant U.S. regulatory development for tokenization this year. Creates a five-year sandbox for on-chain equity trading with phased compliance requirements. Key implications:

  • Legalizes tokenized stock trading through regulated ATS and exchanges
  • Requires 1:1 backing, equal voting rights, and enhanced disclosure
  • Platforms must submit blockchain infrastructure for SEC review within 90 days
  • Robinhood and other major platforms have signaled intent to participate
  • First operational plans expected Q4 2026

DTCC Tokenization on Canton — The DTCC's tokenization service went live on the Canton network, minting U.S. Treasuries onchain. Combined with the Stellar partnership announced in May 2026 (connecting DTCC's tokenization service to the Stellar network for DTC-custodied assets), this represents the institutional plumbing for mainstream asset tokenization. The October 2026 launch target for expanded services appears on track.

European Union

MiCA Full Enforcement — Since July 1, 2026, MiCA is fully enforced. Stablecoin issuers face fines up to 12.5% of annual turnover for non-compliance. The market has bifurcated: regulated issuers (Circle, Tether via European entities) are thriving, while non-compliant issuers have exited. ESMA's June 23 statement accelerated this clearing process. The next phase — potential MiCA extensions to cover tokenized securities beyond stablecoins — is under discussion but unlikely before 2027.

Hong Kong

HKMA/SFC CMU Upgrade — The HKMA and SFC have set an end-2026 deadline for a 24-hour on-chain CMU (Central Moneymarkets Unit) debt settlement upgrade, with tokenized gold as the first asset under the new framework. This positions Hong Kong to become a leader in Asian tokenized commodities.

SFC Secondary Trading Circulars (April 2026) — The SFC issued circulars opening secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized funds, creating a regulatory pathway for retail access to tokenized investment products. Hong Kong's framework — intermediaries can distribute tokenized products with appropriate safeguards — remains one of the most tokenization-friendly regimes globally.

Cross-Border and Infrastructure

Canton Network — The DTCC's adoption of Canton for institutional tokenization signals that permissioned chains are winning the institutional infrastructure battle. Canton's privacy features and regulatory compliance tools make it the preferred rail for traditional finance tokenization, even as public chains dominate DeFi-native RWA products.

Stellar's Institutional Pivot — With $3.4B in RWA value across 49 assets (4th largest network), Stellar has positioned itself as the institutional tokenization chain, hosting WisdomTree, Franklin Templeton, and DTCC-connected assets. Its focus on compliance, low fees, and enterprise partnerships is paying off.

11. Network Distribution

| Network | RWA Count | Total Value | |---|---|---| | Ethereum | 2,697 | $16.7B | | BNB Chain | 2,568 | $5.7B | | Solana | 1,682 | $4.3B | | Stellar | 49 | $3.4B | | Avalanche C-Chain | 803 | $1.8B | | Liquid Network | 9 | $1.6B | | Arbitrum | 5,232 | $996.9M | | ZKsync Era | 1 | $973.3M | | Polygon | 159 | $506.3M | | XRP Ledger | 24 | $498.7M |

Source: RWA.xyz, September 30, 2026

Ethereum maintains its dominant position at $16.7B (43% market share), but the narrative is more nuanced:

  • Stellar has 49 assets but $3.4B — institutional quality over quantity
  • Arbitrum leads in asset count (5,232) but ranks 7th in value — largely DeFi-native credit and synthetic products
  • ZKsync Era has just 1 asset worth $973.3M (BCAP) — single-asset concentration risk
  • XRP Ledger is growing rapidly with 24 assets at $498.7M, driven by Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin and cross-border payment integration

12. Key Risks

Legal Risk

The SEC Innovation Exemption is a five-year sandbox — it can be revoked or modified. Tokenized equity platforms are building infrastructure under conditional, time-limited regulatory relief. Any compliance failure could trigger enforcement actions that cascade across the sector. Investors should monitor the 90-day infrastructure review period (through December 2026) for early signals.

Liquidity Risk

Distributed value ($38.63B) represents only 10.5% of represented value ($367.84B). Most tokenized assets have limited secondary market depth. Redemptions remain the primary exit mechanism for many products. The JLTXX 28.44% decline demonstrates that even institutional-grade products can see rapid outflows with limited on-chain buyers.

Credit Risk

Private credit tokens require analysis of underlying loan portfolios. Goldfinch's $50M+ defaults and 99.8% token collapse in June 2026 remains a cautionary tale. Maple's 99% repayment rate is encouraging but not guaranteed. Centrifuge's token-to-equity conversion introduces a new dimension: token holders must now assess equity risk in addition to protocol risk.

Custody Risk

The layering of tokenized funds (OUSG holding BUIDL, BENJI, and FYOXX) creates custody chain complexity. If any link in the chain fails — custodian, tokenization platform, or fund administrator — downstream tokens lose their backing. The SEC's mandatory customer asset segregation rules under the Innovation Exemption partially address this for equities, but Treasury and credit products remain less regulated.

Concentration Risk

  • XAUT and PAXG control 93% of tokenized commodities
  • USDT controls 62% of the stablecoin market
  • Ondo, xStocks, and Binance bStocks control 81% of tokenized equities
  • Ethereum hosts 43% of all RWA value
  • BCAP alone represents 46% of tokenized PE/VC

This concentration means that idiosyncratic failures at dominant players could have outsized systemic effects.

13. Outlook for October 2026

Expected Developments

  1. SEC infrastructure reviews begin — First tokenized stock platforms submit blockchain architecture for SEC review within the 90-day window
  2. DTCC Canton expansion — Additional asset classes beyond Treasuries may be tokenized on Canton
  3. HKMA tokenized gold pilot — Progress toward the end-2026 CMU upgrade deadline
  4. Centrifuge equity conversion execution — CP172 implementation could set a precedent for other RWA protocol tokens
  5. Ondo tokenized stocks expansion — With $1.04B across 268 symbols and the Innovation Exemption tailwind, Ondo is positioned to accelerate
  6. JLTXX monitoring — Whether JPMorgan's tokenized fund stabilizes or continues to bleed assets will signal broader institutional sentiment

Key Metrics to Watch

  • Whether distributed value recovers above $39B or continues to soften
  • Whether represented value sustains its 38% growth rate or normalizes
  • Tokenized equities reaching $3B total market value
  • Stablecoin market crossing $300B
  • New product launches under the SEC Innovation Exemption

Methodology and Data Sources
